What is Journalism/ What is a journalist?
The duty of a journalist is to investigate areas which would otherwise not be reported to the general public,
allowing the masses to have a more informed world view, to help them better interact with the society we are
a part of. I believe that a journalist should always try to remain impartial when they are producing a story,
releasing their articles as an unbiased account, leaving it up to the consumer to interpret the information.

Due to the ease in which any individual can post first hand accounts to online media,
I believe that journalism as a profession may undergo some changes.
As it is the primary role of a journalist to report news to the public, as clearly and truthfully as is possible,
I see no differentiation between the role a professional journalist plays in reporting news,
and those with a first hand account of certain events, as both the eye witness account and the journalist’s
primary goal is to inform the public.

Examples of the public performing the role of a journalist can be seen through the recent footage released
from the Hong Kong riots, showing the horrifying cases of police brutality.
Without these first hand accounts of what is truly happening on the streets of Hong Kong being released
to the public, it is unlikely that the worldwide population would be aware of the situation in China as the
government would likely censor anything that would showcase the rioters as anything other than violent
hooligans.

Because situations, like the riots in Hong Kong, are still ongoing, and there are those in power
who wish to censor those with opposing ideologies, I believe that journalists serve a vital role in our society.
Journalists are the key to allowing the general public to have a meaningful impact on society, as keeping
them informed allows them to better understand the consequences of decisions we make either as a
society, or those choices made for us by governments.
